Plant of the Week
Hypericum can be a Groundcover or small Shrub. It
attracts pollinators with bright yellow summer flowers and green or colorful berries that the birds love. Florists also use the twigs with berries for interesting arrangements.
#1 Groundcover Hypericum Calcynium grows to 1′ and is evergreen
#2 Pumpkin Hypericum (Nativar) is a small shrub growing 2.5′
#3 Albury Purple Hypericum
Native small shrub up to 3′ tall
Hypericum is even Deer and Rabbit resistant

Magnolia Scale Outbreak

It seems there is an outbreak of this serious pest on Magnolia trees.

You may notice blackened leaves which is sooty mold that grows on the honey droppings from the scale insects sucking the sugar from the twigs. It is a sticky substance that attracts bees, flies and ants. It can drip on your car or walkways located underneath the tree.

Look at the twigs closely for white or brown bumps. This insect is under a shell which is difficult to treat except when the new eggs hatch. The crawler stage is susceptible to horticultural oils which can be used now to smother them. July and August is the time to treat.

Sometimes extremely thick populations can be power washed literally by using the garden hose at high pressure to knock them off.

Sometimes there are beneficial insects that assist in control but high populations will need to be treated, otherwise the tree will suffer and ultimately die.

Adult Scale Stage

If removing clippings or entire shrubs from an infested site take precautions so the insect is not spread to new locations. At this point the recommendations is dispose of material by double-bagging it in plastic bags and putting it out with your household trash. Dead, diseased, or damaged plant parts can be pruned out at any time of the year.
