Please don’t say the F word (Fall)

Fall = Planting Time!

The planting season is not over, it has just begun.
Mid-August -mid-Oct  is the best time plant!  Planting
in the fall gives the roots a chance to establish before winter. As plants go dormant, roots will grow until the soil is frozen. Spring growth depletes energy stored in the roots, and plants require a lot more watering through the summer to keep the roots alive. They will recover more quickly after the spring flush, if the roots have the fall season prior to take hold.
Fall Color Combo: Itea and Diervilla
Ideas for fall color:
There are many native shrubs and perennials that light up your landscape with bright yellow, red, orange and burgundy tones.
Some of our favorites are Itea and Diervilla which have
beautiful spring or summer flowers, seed for the birds and several shades of red fall color.
Add some spice to your landscape with the native Spice bush. It is bright yellow in the fall and the earliest to bloom in the spring with bright yellow flowers that become red berries in the summer . It tolerates many soil conditions, sun or deep shade and is truly deer-proof, not just resistant. Indigenous American used it for medicinal purposes and as a tea. One of the most notable uses is as
the host for the spice bush swallowtail butterfly. Adorable caterpillars that turn into a magnificent butterfly.
Fall flowers are important for pollinators. Here are a few examples that we carry.

Did you know it takes 3 seasons for a plant to fully establish? The 1st year it sleeps, the 2nd year it creeps and the 3rd year it leaps with new growth. By planting in the fall of 2024, your plant will be fully established in 2.5 years with only 2 summers to survive. If you wait until spring of 2025, then it will need a full 3 years including 3 full summers of extra care. Plant this fall and get a jump start on your gardens.
