Below are links to an amazing local service that you can learn more about. We are thrilled that
our offer for end of season free annuals for charities was utilized, and Dimitri House picked out and planted them to give a much more colorful entrance.

Important Landscape Plant Updates:

Magnolia Scale Outbreak

It seems there is an outbreak of this serious pest on Magnolia trees.

You may notice blackened leaves which is sooty mold that grows on the honey droppings from the scale insects sucking the sugar from the twigs. It is a sticky substance that attracts bees, flies and ants. It can drip on your car or walkways located underneath the tree.
Look at the twigs closely for white or brown bumps. This insect is under a shell which is difficult to treat except when the new eggs hatch. The crawler stage is susceptible to horticultural oils which can be used now to smother them.  July and August is the time to treat.
Sometimes extremely thick populations can be power washed literally by using the garden hose at high pressure to knock them off.
Sometimes there are beneficial insects that assist in control but high populations will need to be treated, otherwise the tree will suffer and ultimately die.

Adult Scale Stage

If removing clippings or entire shrubs from an infested site take precautions so the insect is not spread to new locations. At this point the recommendations is dispose of material by double-bagging it in plastic bags and putting it out with your household trash. Dead, diseased, or damaged plant parts can be pruned out at any time of the year.

Treatment Options are available depending on the cycle of the moths and timing.

If you do find you need to replace this heavily utilized landscape shrub we have a couple favorite native replacement recommendations:

Inkberry Holly – Strongbox
Inkberry Holly – Shamrock
